The Dales is a specialist primary school based in Blyth and provides education for children with a variety of additional needs that may not otherwise be met in a mainstream setting. It is also home of the Harrison Centre for Social Mobility based at the school aboard a refurbished train carriage that provides sensory education for the students.
Now, the newly constructed shelter ensures that students can make full use of the fire pit throughout the year, regardless of the weather. This means more opportunities for hands-on learning experiences, where children can develop skills in fire safety, outdoor cooking, and teamwork. The fire pit area will allow pupils to engage in practical lessons that build confidence and independence, all while creating a greater connection with nature.
Outdoor learning plays a crucial role in the development of young minds, encouraging problem-solving, resilience, and creativity. By incorporating fire safety education and cooking skills into the curriculum, The Dales School is providing its students with valuable experiences that will benefit them for years to come.

Harrison Foundation trustee, Daniel Harrison said: “This project is a wonderful example of how community partnerships can create lasting benefits for schools and their students. Our work with the Dales School stretches back over several years now and it is great to see new opportunities being created for the students.”
